Summary of Job Duties:

The Database Administrator II helps maintain and support the university’s database environments. This position is responsible for performing day-to-day database operations, including backups, restores, patching, user account management, and system monitoring. The DBA II assists with incident response and troubleshooting efforts, escalating more complex issues as needed. This role supports performance tuning efforts by reviewing logs, analyzing query behavior, and helping identify opportunities for optimization. It contributes to maintaining technical documentation and supporting compliance efforts tied to audit preparation and institutional data policies. The position includes writing and maintaining scripts for common tasks and basic automation. The DBA II also supports campus-wide projects by assisting with schema changes, testing deployments, and helping with database-related upgrades or rollouts. Participation in knowledge sharing, training, and cross-team collaboration is expected to help ensure consistent operations and institutional continuity.

Familiarity with enterprise database features such as Azure SQL, SQL clustering, and replication technologies is expected. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious relationships with others. This position may perform other duties as assigned. This is an in-person position.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field

Applicable equivalencies may be considered on the above qualifications.

  • At least four years of experience working with relational database management systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with at least two database platforms, such as Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQ, or MySQL

  • Exposure to data warehousing concepts and hands-on experience with ETL tools and basic reporting workflows

  • Experience writing and maintaining basic automation or scripting using tools like PowerShell or Bash; familiarity with infrastructure-as-code concepts (e.g., Terraform, Ansible) is a plus

  • Experience with writing and troubleshooting SQL queries, joins, views, indexes, and stored procedures for routine operations and maintenance tasks.

  • Experience with basic data security practices, including assess controls, role-based permissions, authentication methods, and backup/restore procedures.

  • Experience using command-line tools and scripting for database-related tasks, maintenance routines, or automation of repeatable tasks

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with environments common to higher education, public sector, or other complex, multi-unit organizations

  • Working knowledge of cloud-based database platforms such as Azure SQL and Azure SWL Managed Instances, including familiarity with provisioning, monitoring, and supporting database environments

  • Familiarity with database monitoring tools such as Redgate and health checks, including reviewing logs, performance metrics, and system alerts

  • Knowledge of computer system hardware and software

  • Knowledge of computer user requirements

  • Knowledge of system design procedures

  • Ability to develop computer programs

  • Ability to analyze and modify existing computer systems

  • Ability to lead analyst team in the design and maintenance of computer system processes

  • Ability to determine costs and resource requirements of projects


Additional Information:

Working Conditions consist of standard office environment with occasional after-hours or on-call responsibilities during system outages or maintenance windows.
