Department Overview:
NEXUS is a newly restructured student support department within the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas. We provide proactive, welcoming, and community-centered support to uniquely identified students, including first-generation, low-income, freshman commuter, transfer, and specific scholarship recipients. Our team is committed to advancing student retention, belonging, and academic achievement through direct coaching, peer mentoring, resource connection, and strategic outreach.

Position Summary:
Retention Coordinators are essential members of the NEXUS team, responsible for overseeing the daily operations of both the phone outreach and peer mentoring programs. This role plays a strategic part in advancing student success initiatives by leading student staff, coordinating outreach efforts, and ensuring efficient and effective service delivery.

The ideal candidate is proactive, highly organized, and service-oriented, with strong leadership and communication skills. Key responsibilities include outbound and inbound calling, problem-solving, data management, and content development. Exceptional customer service and professional phone etiquette are essential to succeed in this role.

This position is designed to support the Student Support and Development branch of the department.

This role contributes directly to the mission of NEXUS by helping students navigate the university experience and thrive through intentional engagement and support.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education

  • At least one year customer service experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience in any work setting

  • Experience providing hands-on, step-by-step guidance and support to students, customers, and/or employees

  • At least one year of experience working in higher education, student services, or a related field. This may include part-time, volunteer, and other relevant professional or leadership experiences

  • Experience working with academic retention, academic advising, financial aid, scholarship cohorts, mentoring, or college access and completion programming

  • Experience working with first-generation, low-income, commuter, or transfer student populations

  • Experience with content creation

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Proven communication skills

  • Proficient skill documenting, assessing, and evaluating program-related information and outcomes

  • Proficient skill using Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Excel, PowerBI, MS Forms, student databases, design software, and other related technology, such as Starfish (UASuccess), Blackboard, and Workday

  • Ability to stay flexible and organized while managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
