Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of Music and in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, invites applications for a non-tenure track Instructor of Music Education to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment with a workload of 100% teaching up to four classes per semester. Teaching assignments may include undergraduate methods and graduate music education methods and other courses per the needs of the department depending on level of education, as well as interacting with local public school teachers and work with student teachers. Responsibilities may also include advising undergraduate honors theses and master’s theses/research projects.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence of the academic community. Initial appointment is for a period of one academic year. The opportunity for reappointment will be based on performance and continued need.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate

  • Masters degree in Music Education conferred by the time of appointment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Music Education conferred by the time of appointment

  • Public school experience (3-5 years) that includes multiple areas of expertise, including familiarity with Orff and Kodaly

  • Demonstrate a combination of public school and university teaching experience

  • Evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team both on campus and in relevant professional service organizations

About the Department:
The University of Arkansas Department of Music is housed in the George and Boyce Billingsley Music Building in the heart of the University's flagship campus in Fayetteville. The Department has been a chartered member of Pi Kappa Lambda since 1984, and the University of Arkansas has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1951. Home to over 300 music majors, minors, and graduate students, the department has a faculty of over 50 nationally and internationally recognized scholars, pedagogues, and musicians. The program offers degrees at the bachelor and master levels and offers an intensive one-year performer's certificate. Through generous support from alumni and friends, the Department of Music became an All-Steinway School in 2010. The University of Arkansas is the third SEC school to gain this distinction and one of only 150 universities worldwide with the honor.

The Music Department offers a number of recognized ensembles, many of which have toured nationally and internationally. The Razorback Marching Band, originally formed as a Cadet Corps Band in 1874, is the largest and most visible of the ensembles, performing for thousands of Razorback fans most weekends in the fall semester. Schola Cantorum, the University's longest running choral ensemble, was founded almost 70 years ago. The Department also offers Inspirational Chorale and three additional choirs, University Symphony Orchestra, Opera Theatre, Latin American Music Ensemble, World Music Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, four concert bands including the Wind Ensemble, and a variety of chamber music groups for students.
