Summary of Job Duties:

The BI Developer/Data Engineer leads the development and maintenance of several ETL processes, designs data-related structures and flows, promotes best practices in the coding space, and collaborates with various units across campus. The solutions that this role creates and maintains will directly contribute to reporting solutions that are consumed by campus leadership, campus data partners, and external entities.

Responsibilities include assisting in a campus-wide data transformation that involves the migration to Workday Student as our student information system. The individual will be driving the redesign and support of several processes, sets of code, and reports that directly contribute to the university’s mission of enabling student success. Additional responsibilities would include assisting and collaborating with the team on other reporting tasks such as state and federal reporting requirements, ad hoc requests, and other analytics driven reporting.

Extensive experience and knowledge of SQL and data relationships is required, as is the ability to read, write, and analyze queries of varying complexity. Analyzing, designing, and optimizing processes to be more efficient according to best practices is a requirement. The incumbent should seek opportunities to continuously improve the team’s technical footprint by automating manual or laborious processes to free up time to innovate in other ways.

Great communication skills are essential as the incumbent will help establish and promote a data-driven campus culture, collaborate with campus data partners, and contribute to the overall data strategy mission of the university. Additionally, understanding the importance that data accuracy and data quality plays into the success of data-driven decision making is a key element of the role and the team.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education

  • SQL coding expertise

  • ETL process development

  • Data literacy

  • Strong code analysis skills

  • Ability to anticipate and identify data issues before they become problems, either in the source system or our internal processes

  • Knowledge and implementation of best practices with coding

  • Proficiency in translating business requirements into technical terms for IT people in a project centric environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Complex debugging capabilities

  • Familiarity with SAS Enterprise programming

  • System migration project/go-live experience

  • Produces efficient documentation that is easily interpreted

  • Proven track record of success in other data roles

  • Workday report development/data extraction

  • Previous experience in higher education

  • Data model design experience

  • Some knowledge of visualization tools

  • Process design or coding in Azure or SQL Server environments

  • Knowledge of data governance practices

  • Past usage of code repositories
