Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated technical leader to lead our research and standards team focused on product sustainability. As the Principal Research Scientist, you will play a critical role in conducting research and analysis to support the development and implementation of sustainability standards and services. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to provide technical expertise, drive innovation, and contribute to the advancement of sustainable practices in various industries.
Individual in this role can be located in Marietta GA, Chicago IL, Fremont CA, or Lowell AR.
This position is HYBRID, employees are required to be on-site 3 days a week.
Responsibilities
Conduct research and analysis: Design and execute research projects to assess and improve sustainability practices in various industries. This includes analyzing industry trends, evaluating the environmental and social impact of different processes and practices, and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Develop sustainability standards and frameworks: Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to develop and refine sustainability standards and frameworks. This includes conducting literature reviews, analyzing best practices, and contributing to the development of guidelines and criteria for sustainable practices.
Stay updated on sustainability trends and regulations: Keep abreast of the latest developments in sustainability, including emerging regulations, industry standards, and best practices. Apply this knowledge to inform the development of sustainability services and standards.
Provide technical expertise: Support the development and implementation of sustainability services, such as sustainability assessments, certifications, and reporting. Provide technical guidance and expertise to clients and internal teams on sustainability-related issues and opportunities.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams: Work closely with consultants, project managers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality sustainability services to clients. Collaborate on projects, share knowledge, and contribute to the overall success of the firm.
Communicate research findings: Prepare and present research findings to internal teams, management, and external stakeholders. Clearly communicate the environmental and social impact of different practices and recommend strategies for improvement.
Foster partnerships and collaborations: Identify and engage with external partners, research institutions, and industry organizations to stay at the forefront of sustainability research and practices. Collaborate on joint research projects and leverage external expertise to drive innovation.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in sustainability, environmental science, engineering, or a related field. A strong background in sustainability research and standards development is preferred.
- Proven experience in conducting research and analysis related to sustainability, including industry assessments, benchmarking, and best practice analysis.
- Strong understanding of sustainability principles, frameworks, and relevant regulations and standards.
- Proficiency in using sustainability assessment tools, data analysis software, and relevant software applications.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.

- Total Rewards All employees at UL are eligible for bonus compensation. We provide competitive salaries, and a range of benefits designed to look after you. The salary range is $153,300.00-$204,400.00 based upon years of experience that is commensurate with the level of the position. All employees at UL Solutions are eligible for annual bonus compensation. The target for this position is 20% of the base salary offered. Employees are eligible for health benefits such as medical, dental and vision: wellness benefits such as mental & financial health: and retirement savings401k commensurate with standard rewards offered in each individual location or country, for the relevant position level.
